This report presents the results of monitoring tolerance towards refugees and asylum seekers in the Zakarpattia region from August 2011 to August 2012. The study, conducted in partnership with the Uzhhorod Press Club, focuses on analyzing the attitudes of local mass media towards migrants. The primary goal was to analyze journalists' judgments to determine the level of tolerance within the regional media space, as well as to identify instances of "hate speech" directed at vulnerable groups of foreigners

Key findings:
Media in Zakarpattia often created a false impression of mass migration flows, although the number of migrants in the region was actually small. In the majority of materials included in the sample, authors do not distinguish refugees from other categories of foreigners, generalizing negative stereotypes to the entire group and rarely highlighting specific human stories. Researchers recorded a predominance of "soft" forms of hate speech and signs of hidden xenophobia among journalists, most of whom demonstrate indifference to the topic or use manipulative headlines. An attempt to positively influence public opinion was observed in only a quarter of the cases
